Project Overview
Created for the 2026 production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Alnwick Playhouse, the LED Technicolour Dreamcoat reimagines one of musical theatre's most recognisable costumes through the integration of costume design and live lighting. Developed by fashion and textile artist Meg Fletcher in collaboration with Luke Daley of Orbital FX, the project combines traditional costume making with a bespoke electronic system built specifically for performance.
Commissioned by Alnwick Stage Musical Society, the garment was designed to become a focal point of the production. Constructed from twenty-four rainbow chiffon panels arranged within a circular cape, the dreamcoat incorporates 936 programmable LEDs concealed throughout the garment. Integrated hand controls allow the performer to trigger lighting sequences live on stage, creating moments that respond directly to the action and music of the show.
Designed to exist in two distinct states, the dreamcoat functions as both costume and performance object. Unlit, it presents a dramatic silhouette inspired by the iconic coat of many colours. Illuminated, it transforms into a moving display of light, demonstrating how technology can be embedded within costume to enhance storytelling and create new possibilities for live performance.
