This is a project in response to a brief set by The Bowes Museum. Fletcher is the 4th artist to create flag designs - the commission also forms part of the museum’s wider programme supporting artists and makers in the North East.
CHARACTER STUDIES – 3 ACTS
Created in response to Rebel - Storyteller - Visionary, this flag series brings together the visual legacy of Vivienne Westwood and the influential collecting legacy of Josephine Bowes, whose vision laid the foundations of The Bowes Museum and its archives. The three flags reimagine Josephine Bowes as a contemporary figure moving through the exhibition's three thematic eras, progressing from left to right.
Each painting is based on the portrait of Josephine Bowes in the pink dress. For each era, the designs merge elements of the portrait with silhouettes and references drawn from Westwood's archive and wider research.
